It's true, last year more people died as a result of pharmaceuticals or prescription pills than died from gunshot wounds. According to WikiAnswers.com each year just over 30,000 people die from gunshot wounds, and according to DrugWarFacts.com and their report of annual deaths in the U.S, 32,000 people died from adverse reactions to prescription drugs and 17,000 died from illegal drug use (ie heroin, meth). However, "9.An exhaustive search of the literature finds no credible reports of deaths induced by marijuana. The US Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) records instances of drug mentions in medical examiners' reports, and though marijuana is mentioned, it is usua'lly in combination with alcohol or other drugs. Marijuana alone has not been shown to cause an overdose death.".

In an article in medicalnewstoday.com it is stated that more people die from unintentional over-doses of prescription drugs than die from cocaine or heroin each year in the U.S. It is important to note the fact that just because we call them prescription drugs, does not mean the user was prescribed the drug, oftentimes the user obtained the drugs illegally.
Yet the DEA surely isn't busting down the doors of suburban teenagers distributing prescription drugs, like they are doing to marijuana users. If the aim of the Narco Police units and the DEA is to irradicate dangerous and deadly drugs from our streets, they needn't look any further than their neighborhood pharmacy a.k.a drugstore.
